CALCUTTA, India Mother Teresa sat up in bed and showed othersigns of recovery Monday after six days of treatment in a Calcuttahospital for a faltering heart and for a lung infection.
"We are very hopeful, though she is still not out of danger,"said Dr. Sandeep Lahiri, who is a member of a team of six physicianstreating the ailing Roman Catholic nun.
Mother Teresa found the strength to gather herself up in bed fora few minutes and to scribble a note saying: "I want to seesisters."
Her condition had stabilized over the weekend, but her heartbeatremained irregular and she had to be on a respirator. By Mondayevening, doctors had cut her time on the respirator.
Calcutta Archbishop Henry D'Souza visited Mother Teresa to wishher a happy birthday. She turns 86 today, but many people inCalcutta celebrate the occasion a day early.
"She held my hand as I greeted her," D'Souza said. "She saidshe was feeling pain from the respirator, but was otherwise feelingbetter."
