Vic: Man jailed for raping prostitute
By Stuart Walsh
MELBOURNE, Aug 22 AAP - Street prostitutes were entitled to the same protection underthe law as any other citizen, a Melbourne judge said today when he jailed a 34-year-oldman for rape.
Father of four Abraham Hzaife planned his attacks on his two women victims, pickingthem up in St Kilda with a co-accused in a car fitted with child safety locks and stolenregistration plates, said County Court judge Tony Duckett.
His first victim, a 20-year-old, was lured into the car on August 29 last year withthe promise of $200.
But as the car was driven off, Hzaife put on gloves, threatened the woman with a knifeand told her she would be raped and murdered.
The terrified woman was raped and eventually dragged from the car and left by the roadside.
The judge said the woman was severely traumatised by her ordeal and a psychologicalcondition she was suffering from had worsened.
The second woman, a 25-year-old, was attacked while trapped inside the car having beenpicked up a few days later, on September 4 last year.
Hzaife ripped off the defenceless woman's clothes, raped her twice and threatened herwith a handgun.
A co-accused, who cannot be named as he is yet to face trial, allegedly raped the womanand threatened her with a machete.
Judge Duckett, in jailing Hzaife for six years, told him street prostitutes were "entitledto the protection against criminal behaviour that the law provides to all citizens".
Hzaife, of Roxburgh Park, will be eligible for parole after serving four-and-a-half years.
He has been in custody for almost a year.
He pleaded guilty to three counts of rape and two of false imprisonment.
